Advocacy

SPOON leverages data and evidence to advocate for policies, investments and actions to improve nutrition and feeding for children with disabilities and children without family care. SPOON has been steadily building momentum to ensure that governments, funders, and service providers include children with disabilities and children without family care.

Our work is informing changes in policies and practices that will reach millions of children. SPOON and our partners provide indispensable insight into policies, services, and investments that affect the feeding and nutrition of children who have historically been excluded. We are pushing for disability-inclusive nutrition, early child development, and family care to fulfill the rights of all children.

A few examples of our work include:

SPOON’s work in multiple countries has resulted in inclusive language in nutrition policies, improved nutritional norms and practices in childcare institutions, media coverage around nutrition and disability, and increased awareness among policy makers and program leaders.

SPOON advocates for every child’s right to family care, for example advocating for children with disabilities to be included in global care reform systems.

SPOON pushed for the passage of the Global Child Thrive Act, which mandates the US Government support inclusive early child development around the world.

In February 2024, SPOON won a Zero Project award for advocating for children with disabilities. The award recognizes SPOON’s system-wide approach to fighting malnutrition among children with disabilities.
