The Uniqueness of Our Program
While other organizations provide valuable relief to orphans, SPOON Foundation provides an exceptional focus on orphans' unique nutritional needs through needs assessment and intervention. This approach allows for meaningful and sustainable impact on orphan health and development, at minimal cost. As a small, grassroots organization, we forge partnerships with researchers, clinicians, NGOs and policy leaders in target countries to create systemic change that is culturally-sensitive and sustainable.
Our Orphan Nutrition Program adheres closely to these guiding principles:
- COLLABORATE
Work in collaboration with health experts, nutrition scientists, and child welfare organizations internationally to ensure that our programs are optimally effective, relevant, and culturally sensitive. - THINK LONG TERM
Identify at onset of program the in-country party(ies) who will be responsible for implementing, on an ongoing basis, the nutrition programs developed, and involve them from the beginning in program design and execution. - MEET THE TRUE NEED
Begin each program with a comprehensive assessment to ensure that the programs we develop are true to the greatest needs of children living without families. - STAY LEAN, REACH FAR
Serve as a technical nutrition and feeding resource to existing child welfare organizations and governments internationally so they can better advocate for and protect the health of the children they serve. This partnership model allows SPOON to stay lean and effective, while reaching the maximum number of children in need. - FOCUS
Develop all programming specifically for children who are are presently or were formerly deprived of permanent parental care. Though under-nutrition reaches children with families as well, our primary focus is on orphaned children, for whom the stakes of malnutrition are particularly high.
